Determining Patterns of Life via Crowdsourcing

Determining Patterns of Life via Crowdsourcing Image

The aim of this project was to look at how a ‘crowd-sourcing’ approach amongst military personnel within a Joint environment can be used to enhance collection and communication of “pattern-of-life” information, giving a resultant improvement in the Common Operating Picture (COP), Situational Awareness (SA), Situational Understanding (SU) and operational decision-making, and how this knowledge and improvement can be maintained across the hand-over between units.

More specifically:

  • Identify tools and techniques which can be used to document and visualise patterns of life.
  • Understand how such tools/techniques might be used to describe an area of operations.
  • Explore the degree to which ‘crowdsourcing’ from military personnel might be utilised as inputs to these tools/techniques.
  • Investigate the utility of such tools to support handovers between units.

K Sharp worked in partnership with Daden to deliver this project, which completed in May 2015.  The 18 month project was delivered in conjunction with BAE Systems as part of the Defence Human Capability Science and Technology Centre (www.dhcstc.com).
